Tags With Tassels

(This post is part of my Frosty Festivities 2014 Blog Event – see the beginning HERE!)

Here’s a quick make for you this hour… some tags with tassels:

The tassels on here means these tags stand out without needing much more embellishment!

Here’s how to make a tassel:

Step 1: Find a strong board, twice as tall as how tall you want your tassel to be. I used a piece of cladding we had lying around from our kitchen re-do. Wind some twine / wool / thread around the board until you think the tassel will be thick enough (it will be twice as thick once it’s folded over):

Step 2: Use another piece of the same twine to tie a knot around the middle:

Step 3: Pull the twine off the board, and turn the knot so it’s on the inside of the tassel:

Step 4: Thread a needle with more of the same twine, or with a complimentary colour cotton thread – I used a different thread so it’s easier for you to see:

Step 5: Wrap the thread around the top of the tassel 10 times or so. Use the needle to stitch over and under the hoop of thread you’ve just created, to secure it:

Step 6: Tuck the loose end of thread among the other loose ends of the tassel, and cut them all the the same length:

I made a couple more tassels, one with gold crochet thread, one with green embroidery thread:

Then I chose a few cut-apart journal cards and punched holes in the top left corner:

I used more of the same tassel threads to tie the tassels to the punched holes. I left these strings long to help me attach them to gifts. I also added a few gems to each tag:

That’s it, a quick special tag for a present this Christmas!

Be Inspired:

Make a tassel to go on your next project

Use cut-apart cards to make some tags

Use bakers twine, embroidery thread, or crochet thread (or wool) to tie around something

Have you ever made a tassel before? I hadn’t and I think I might be hooked now!

See you again soon,

Jennifer x

  • I have made one tassel before and was so delighted with how it turned out. It was on a card, though, and pretty bulky. This idea of using it for a tag is wonderful!!! This is a great way to use some of those extra cut-apart cards, too. Hey, maybe even I can make tags this year!!!! 🙂

  • I broke my door handle and rather than replace it with another gold coloured hoop I made a tassel. They are fun to make with kids too, along with pom poms!
